LIVING CONDITIONS IN UKRAINE
CURRENCY
The official currency is the hryvnia (UAH), which is divided into 100 kopecks. Banks are usually open Monday to Friday until 6pm and readily exchange hryvnia for hard currency (banknotes only). US dollars and euros are exchanged easily at banks and currency offices, and while other currencies can also be exchanged, they are not as widely accepted. ATM machines are widely available in all cities. Traveler’s checks are not widely accepted and attract high commission rates and lengthy paperwork. Major restaurants, shops, and hotels accept Visa, MasterCard, and Euro Card; however, credit cards are not widely accepted, particularly in remote areas and smaller establishments. Outside the main cities it is advisable to carry a supply of local currency.
$1 US = 42.00 hryvnia (2025 exchange rate) and fluctuates a bit sometimes.
TRANSPORTATION
Public transport includes electric buses, trams, vans, and subways with affordable fares.
International students travel on student card fares, which are much more economical within the city and also within Ukraine.
A huge railway network is working in Ukraine, within cities and even to other European countries.
In almost all major cities, airports are also available for air travel, from which domestic and international flights arrive and depart.
A very modern underground metro network is also available to travel within the cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv.
FOOD
Food items can be bought anywhere in the city, like in shops, supermarkets, and common markets, and there are networks of bead shops everywhere in the city that work all night even. A lot of foreigners have opened their own country food shops and cafes, as Ukraine is a country for international students, and foreigners are normally found at every place in Ukraine.
In Ukraine food is not expensive like in other European countries, as for $100-$150, one person may buy food for one month if he/she cooks at the hostel, At all hostels there are kitchen facilities available for international students.
LANDLINE AND MOBILE PHONE SERVICES
Ukraine has a very strong network of landline phone services and also mobile phone companies. Mainly there are 5 main mobile companies. 1: Kyivstar, 2: Life, 3: MTC.4: U’tel, 5: Beeline.A new mobile SIM packet costs some 1$US.
Mobile-to-mobile calls are not so expensive; even international call schemes are working throughout the year. From a mobile phone, an international call costs some 20 cents per minute, but there are other much cheaper ways also to call internationally legally and officially.
Within the same network a minimum charge is paid monthly, and calls are unlimited and free.
